If you follow us, you will no doubt have seen us talking all about the Race to 100 Birdies on the 2020 Pro Tour. We’ve sponsored the debut tour by offering anyone who can achieve 100 birdies across the tour’s events, £20,000… and it really did provide a nail-biting finish!!
With 20 events down and just two to go, Nick Poppleton had 89 birdies achieved and eleven to find at Bradford and Huddersfield Golf Clubs.
Back in July, it looked like the bonus was nailed on with Nick and others raking in the birdies, including Nick McCarthy and Tom Chapman, who had shown great promise in hitting the £20k target across the tour. But with the final game in hand at Huddersfield, Poppleton had just 6 birdies left to find across the 18 holes… and talk about going to the wire!
What. A. Day…
What was a reasonably pleasant day weather wise, with winds becoming stronger on the back 9 for Nick Poppleton who was on the hunt to find those six sought after birdies.
He started with an opening couple of pars through the first two holes, followed by a birdie at the 3rd. His next birdie coming up the 6th hole with a fantastic winding putt which met the middle of the hole… “two birdies” I believe he gestured to the crowd.
Nick Marsh who was playing in the last group with Poppleton started exceptionally well with numerous birdies through the first 7 holes. Nick McCarthy was the third member of this group, who had multiple opportunities for birdie on the front nine and was on the hunt for 10 to achieve a share of the £20k up for grabs. Nick Poppleton birdied the 9th hole with a fantastic approach shot which looked to go to within an inch.
Three birdies down through nine holes, three birdies to go on the back nine. On par to achieve the feat.
After a few pars on the start of the back nine, Poppleton found a birdie at the par 5 14th hole, leaving just two to find in the last four holes. A 12ft putt on the 15th was hit firmly and shaved the hole – painful. Two to find in the last three. His approach to the 16th fell short and left him a 25ft putt up the hill, which again narrowly missed.
Two required from the last two holes. Par 3, playing tough, he put it to 15ft with a putt across the green. Nick needed this to keep the bonus alive, agonisingly this putt missed, which meant he would at best finish on 99 birdies if he were to birdie the last, which he did… comfortably.
All round a brilliant effort and some fantastic golf played not only yesterday but throughout the season from Nick Poppleton, Nick McCarthy and Nick Marsh, to name a few.
