Britain’s Summer of Sport – what are you looking forward to?

This summer, the 2022 sports calendar in the United Kingdom features many major events, including the women’s Euros held in England, Wimbledon, Formula 1 British Grand Prix and many more. Even though footballing fans will have to wait for the World Cup to begin, there is plenty for sporting fans to get excited about this summer.

Women’s Euros 2022

England will host the UEFA women’s Euro finals which will commence in July. The Lionesses will be joined by 15 other nations, opening the tournament on Wednesday 6^th July against Austria.

This summer is set to be a huge summer not only for the Lionesses but for women’s football as a whole, with the development of women’s sports continuing to grow. Hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to attend the tournament, with millions more tuning in to watch it on television across the world – there’s huge potential for women’s football to take another step forward in the spotlight.

Furthermore, as the calibre of women’s football rises year on year, European women’s football competition has never been more intense, and this tournament may just be remembered as the most competitive women’s Euros ever! At the last World Cup, seven of the eight quarter-finalists were teams from Europe so this summer we will get to see the very best, world-class players and teams on display; it’s not one to be missed.

Formula 1 British Grand Prix

After a record-breaking attendance in 2021, the Formula 1 British Grand Prix returns to Silverstone. This year, the British Grand Prix will take place on the 3^rd July where Lewis Hamilton will be looking to replicate his victory of last season. Currently, Ferrari is back at the front and has been able to enjoy the season so far with Leclerc having a healthy lead at 71 points. However, it is still very early in the season; this year will be the longest season in F1’s history with 23 rounds and three sprint races confirmed too!

The 2021 season was arguably the finest season we have ever witnessed in F1 history, with Max Verstappen taking the title from Lewis Hamilton at the death. And this brought a lot of attention to F1 as it was the fastest-growing major sports league on the planet in terms of follower growth in 2021. Therefore, there will be a lot more acknowledgement towards the 2022 season than ever before because of the effect the 2021 season had on sports fans. The 2022 British Grand Prix at Silverstone should be on the summer schedule for sports lovers because if it’s anything like last year’s race when Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen crashed in the opening lap, they’ll be in for a treat.

The Open

The home of golf, the Old Course at St Andrews, will host the 150th Open. This will be the largest in the history of the competition, with a record-breaking 290,000 fans set to attend the Old Course from the 10^th to 17^th July. At what is sure to be a historic Open, the world’s greatest players will be battling it out to try and capture the Claret Jug. The tournament has been graced by golf’s greatest champions with St Andrew winners like Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods is set to make a return to St Andrews this year, which will mean his comeback story will include at least one more major championship appearance after just completing his 4th and final round at The Masters. Golfing fans will be looking forward to this tournament particularly as it marks the 30th time it has been played at the Old Course – we look forward to this summer’s celebration of The Open.
