Insurance can be complex and demands a lot of detail to make sure you are properly protected. Here, we outline a few of the things you need to think about when it comes to your motor and home insurance renewal.
Â
- Check the Statement of Fact provided by your broker. In most cases, this will be attached separate to the Schedule. It is your responsibility to ensure that all of the information included here is accurate and up to date so that your insurance will cover you as required. If an element of information is left incorrectly noted on your Statement of Fact this could, in the worst-case scenario, result in your policy being voided by your insurer or a claim not being valid.
Â
- Consider if there are any changes you need to make us aware of. For example, do you have children that have now moved away (with their things) to university, have a renovation planned in the next few months, or perhaps you have treated yourself to a new watch – all of these things can impact on the cover you need, whether it be a whole section of cover that needs to be removed or added, or the level of your sums insured needing to be altered. Being prudent at renewal can prevent an unpleasant surprise in the event of a future claim.
Â
- Have you accumulated any points on your driving licence? It is very important to make your broker aware of any speeding offences you have experienced in the past year as this will impact your car insurance and its terms. This can be easy to overlook as any incidents may have occurred a number of months ago but it is important – you can very easily double check online too – simply enter your driving licence number, the postcode on it and your NI number, here. Making your broker aware of any offences or points is vital to ensuring you are covered, and on the correct basis.
Â
- If you haven’t already, add your dedicated contacts’ phone numbers to your phonebook when you have completed your home insurance renewal. At McClarrons, you will benefit from both a dedicated Account Executive and Account Handler – both will have an ongoing understanding of your risks, home(s) insurance, car(s) insurance and policy and will be able to help with any queries, adjustments you may need to make to your policy, and provide assistance in the event of a claim. This can be particularly helpful when you need to know something about your insurance but do not have access to your documents. It would also be sensible to add your insurers’ claims number(s); whilst we always encourage our clients to come to us when an incident occurs, this could also be of benefit.
