ABOUT CHARITY & COMMUNITY GROUP INSURANCE

Charity insurance specialists

Whether you rely on volunteers, organise fundraising events, manage community buildings, provide advice or offer support to vulnerable people, your organisation faces a unique combination of risks that should be reflected in your charity insurance.

At McClarrons, we arrange insurance for charities, cover for not-for-profit organisations, and community group insurance, from small volunteer-led groups to national charities. Our team takes the time to understand how your organisation operates, the people you support, the activities you deliver and the challenges you face before recommending tailored insurance solutions.

As experienced charity insurance brokers, we work with specialist insurers that understand the charity sector and its evolving risks. If you provide regulated care services, we can also ensure your insurance meets Care Quality Commission (or equivalent) and Local Authority requirements.

CHARITY INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

What insurance does my charity or community group need?

Employers' Liability Insurance

Employers' Liability insurance is a legal requirement for organisations that employ staff; it can protect your organisation if an employee suffers an injury or illness as a result of their work and brings a claim against you. An important note to be aware of when arranging your charity liability insurance is that this could include incidents involving office staff, support workers and even volunteers carrying out activities under your supervision. Cover typically includes legal defence costs and compensation, helping protect your organisation's finances while ensuring you meet your legal responsibilities.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional Indemnity insurance can protect your organisation if a client, service user or third party claims that negligent advice, professional services or an error has caused them financial loss. This cover is particularly important for charities providing counselling, advocacy, financial guidance, employment support or regulated care services. Professional Indemnity included within your charities insurance can cover legal defence costs, compensation and associated expenses, helping provide reassurance to those delivering specialist advice and support.

Product Liability Insurance

If your organisation sells products, Product Liability insurance helps protect against claims arising from injury or property damage caused by those items. This could include homemade food sold at a fundraising event, electrical goods donated to a charity shop or handcrafted products sold to raise funds, for example. As part of your not for profit insurance, Product Liability can cover legal defence costs and compensation if a claim is brought against your organisation, helping you continue fundraising activities with confidence while protecting your finances and reputation.

Public Liability Insurance

Public Liability insurance can protect your organisation if a member of the public, volunteer, beneficiary or visitor suffers an injury or property damage as a result of your activities. Whether you operate from your own premises, hire community venues or organise events, charity public liability insurance can provide cover for legal defence costs and compensation if a claim is made against your organisation. If you work with vulnerable adults or children, cover can often be extended to include allegations of abuse, providing valuable protection for charities delivering community and care services.

Trustee Indemnity Insurance

Trustee Indemnity, also known as Directors' & Officers' (D&O) insurance helps protect trustees, directors and senior managers if legal action is taken against them personally for alleged wrongful acts, negligence, errors or omissions made while managing the organisation. Investigating and defending these claims can be expensive, even where no wrongdoing is ultimately found. This cover helps protect personal assets while giving trustees confidence to make decisions in the best interests of the organisation. This cover can also support trustee recruitment by demonstrating a commitment to good governance.

Cyber Insurance

Charities increasingly rely on digital systems to manage donations, communicate with supporters and store sensitive personal and financial information, making them attractive targets for cyber criminals. Cyber Insurance protects your organisation against the impact of risks such as ransomware, phishing attacks, data breaches and business email compromise. Given the growing cyber threat facing the voluntary sector, Cyber Insurance is an increasingly valuable addition to charity insurance for organisations of every size. Other insurances for charities to consider

If your charity owns, leases or operates from premises such as an office, community building, village hall or charity shop, buildings and contents insurance may be required to help protect the physical assets your organisation relies on every day. Cover can look to include your buildings, office equipment, furniture, IT systems, stock and other essential contents.

It’s equally important to ensure your buildings and contents are insured for the correct value. Donated items should be insured based on the cost of replacing them with a modern equivalent, while buildings should reflect their current rebuild cost rather than market value.

Regularly reviewing your sums insured can help reduce the risk of underinsurance, helping ensure your charity insurance provides the level of protection your organisation expects when making a claim. You can learn more about the importance of accurate valuations in our blog that explains underinsurance and Rebuild Cost Assessments.

A serious incident such as a fire, flood or storm damage can prevent your charity or community group from delivering essential services for weeks or even months. Business Interruption insurance helps protect your organisation by covering lost income, increased operating costs and, where applicable, the additional expense of relocating to temporary premises while repairs are completed. This cover can be particularly valuable for charities that rely on fundraising events, grant funding linked to service delivery or income from charity shops and community facilities.

Legal Expenses insurance can give charities and community groups access to specialist legal advice and financial support when dealing with a wide range of legal matters. Cover can be included for employment disputes, volunteer issues, contract disagreements, compliance investigations, regulatory action and representation at coroner’s inquests. Policies often include access to confidential legal helplines and employment advice to assist before problems escalate into costly disputes.

When arranging your charities insurance, it is extremely important to understand the conditions applicable to a legal expenses policy, such as the ‘prospect of success’ clause and ‘advice precedent’ clauses, which your broker should explain prior to cover being incepted, so your organisation can make full use of the protection available when legal challenges arise.

Medical Malpractice insurance protects charities and not for profit organisations against claims arising from negligent clinical or healthcare services that result in injury to a patient or service user. This could include the incorrect administration of medication, failure to follow a care plan, delayed treatment or other professional errors or omissions made while delivering healthcare or regulated personal care.

This cover is particularly important for organisations providing nursing services, personal care, therapy, healthcare advice or treatment, or supporting vulnerable people. As part of a comprehensive charity insurance programme, Medical Malpractice insurance can help cover legal defence costs, compensation payments and associated claims expenses, providing valuable financial protection when things don’t go to plan.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Charity & Community Group Insurance FAQs

Charities and non-profits face diverse risks depending on their size, activities, and whether they employ staff. Essential coverages typically include:

  • Employers’ Liability Insurance: A legal requirement for organisations with staff, it can cover claims if an employee or volunteer suffers a work-related injury or illness.
  • Public Liability Insurance: Helps protect against claims if a member of the public, visitor, volunteer or beneficiary suffers injury or property damage due to your activities or events.
  • Product Liability Insurance: Can cover claims arising from items you sell or distribute, such as homemade food at a fundraising event or items sold in a charity shop.
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance: Helps protect organisations providing advice, counselling, mentoring or regulated care against claims of financial loss due to professional negligence or errors.

While standard policies often exclude non-employees, a well-structured charity insurance policy can extend Employers’ Liability and Public Liability to cover volunteers under your supervision. This helps ensure protection if a volunteer is injured while working for you, or if a volunteer causes accidental injury or property damage to a third party.

While not all charity insurance products are mandated by law, Employers’ Liability Insurance is legally required if your organisation employs staff (even part-time) or uses volunteers. Furthermore, holding adequate liability insurance is frequently a strict requirement for securing grant funding, local authority contracts, venue hire agreements, and operating community buildings safely.
