The 15th to the 21st June marks the UK’s Learning Disability Week, an annual campaign organised by Mencap. This year’s theme, “Do You See Me?”, encourages people to look beyond labels and recognise people with learning disabilities for who they are, celebrating their achievements, ambitions and contributions to society.
For those working within the care sector, this message is particularly pertinent.
At McClarrons, our specialist Care & Social Welfare Team works closely with organisations providing support to people with learning disabilities, autism and complex care needs. From supported living providers and charities, to home care and domiciliary care organisations, we understand the vital role these services play in helping people live safe, independent and fulfilling lives.
Understanding the importance of specialist support
Supporting people with learning disabilities goes far beyond meeting regulatory requirements. It is about creating opportunities, promoting independence and ensuring every individual is treated with dignity, respect and understanding.
The theme of this year’s Learning Disability Week serves as an important reminder that every person has their own goals, aspirations and challenges. Effective care is centred around the individual, recognising their strengths and helping them achieve the outcomes that matter most to them. This is something our team understands both professionally and personally.
Earlier this year, we welcomed Sophia to McClarrons’ Care & Social Welfare Team. Before joining the insurance industry, Sophia worked as a Support Worker for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, supporting people with learning disabilities with their day to day needs. Her firsthand experience provides valuable insight into the realities faced by both care providers and the individuals they support.
Continuing to learn from the Care sector

By continually building our knowledge of the sector, we are better placed to understand our clients’ organisations, the risks they face and the important work they carry out every day.
