Professional Indemnity for Care Consultants
Specialist Professional Indemnity insurance for those working as consultants in the care sector.
Insurance for care consultants
McClarrons has partnered with market-leading online business insurer, Markel Direct, to offer specialist Professional Indemnity insurance for consultants in the care sector. Markel Direct’s insurance policy has been built to protect care consultants against the unforeseen – from making a mistake in your work that results in your client losing money, to personal injury claims from third parties. Designed with care consultants in mind, you can tailor your cover to your needs and activities. The policy can also include additional, valuable elements of cover such as Public Liability and Directors & Officers Liability.
What insurance should care consultants consider?
Professional Indemnity insurance
Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance protects you against allegations of mistakes made when providing professional services or advice to your clients. Many clients will require you to have PI insurance in place before you can even start work with them. This cover is useful should a client claim against you for costs incurred relating to your work, due to a mistake you have made or for providing inaccurate advice, for example. Equally, the advice you provide may be accurate but could lead to other areas of service provision slipping and the client suffering a reduced CQC rating, for example; the client could then look to recover their losses from you. Public Liability insurance
Public Liability (PL) insurance protects you against allegations of injuring someone because of your work or causing damage to third party property. Similar to professional indemnity insurance, clients will often ask for proof you hold Public Liability insurance before you can start work. Public Liability insurance can help in circumstances such as someone tripping over your laptop cable and injuring themselves so they are unable to work and claiming against you for their losses, or you accidentally causing damage to property whilst on site, like by spilling coffee on a care manager’s laptop, which they may claim reimbursement from you for. Directors & Officers Liability insurance
Directors & Officers (D&O) Liability insurance protects you as a Limited company director or officer. If you, as a director or manager, are held personally liable for poor decisions, advice or mismanagement (amongst other breaches), even if it was not intentional, a personal claim could be brought against you putting your personal assets at risk. In such a situation, this insurance can step in to protect you and your personal assets. Contact Us

Frequently asked questions
This type of insurance protects consultants against claims of negligence, errors, or omissions made by clients so is a well worthwhile cover for any consultant to have in place; it covers legal costs and any compensation that may be required to rectify the mistake. Having professional indemnity insurance ensures that consultants can operate with peace of mind, knowing they are protected against potential financial losses and reputational damage arising from their professional services.
As a consultant, you may wish to consider the below insurances, as a minimum:
Professional Indemnity Insurance: Protects against claims of negligence, errors, or omissions made by clients, covering legal costs and compensation.
Public Liability Insurance: Covers claims for injury or property damage resulting from your business activities, including incidents at your premises or client sites.
Directors & Officers (D&O) Insurance: Safeguards the personal assets of directors and officers against legal actions due to mismanagement, breach of duty, or non-compliance.
No, it is not a legal requirement for consultants to have professional indemnity insurance. However, it is highly recommended as it protects against claims of negligence, errors, or omissions made by clients, covering legal costs and any compensation required. Additionally, some clients and contracts may require consultants to have this insurance as a condition of doing business.
Your employer may cover professional indemnity insurance, but it depends on the company’s policies and the nature of your employment. It’s important to check with your employer to understand if you are covered under their professional indemnity insurance policy. If not, you may need to obtain your own coverage to ensure you are protected against claims of negligence, errors, or omissions in your professional work.
