Insurance Requirements

What insurance do Racehorse Trainers need to consider?

Employers’ Liability insurance

This insurance is a legal requirement for anyone employing individuals; this can include casual or seasonal workers, family, and self-employed contractors. Employers’ Liability cover offers financial protection for the damages, compensation costs and legal fees that may come as a result of a work-related injury or illness suffered by an employee. This insurance cover can be even more important in businesses where the risk of injury is higher. Contact Us

Care, Custody & Control Liability insurance

This is an important cover to have if you are caring for horses belonging to others, or that others have a financial interest in. Ultimately, this provides cover for you and your business should a horse under your care, custody or control become injured, ill, or die, and a claim be made against you for negligence or other form of error or omission when it comes to your duty. This cover can pay for legal costs as well as compensation, should it be awarded. Contact Us

Stables, Buildings & Contents insurance

One of the more obvious covers to consider is to protect the physical infrastructure of your business, such as stables and outbuildings, from events such as flood, fire and vandalism. In addition, the contents of these should be covered, such as saddlery, tack and other specialist equipment. You should also consider Business Interruption insurance alongside this to support the business should an event that causes material damage prevent the business from operating as normal. Contact Us

Public Liability insurance

This insurance provides protection should a horse under your care cause injury to someone or damage property belonging to a third party, leading to a claim being made against you or your business. For example, if a horse causes damage to a visitor's car. Policies can also be arranged to provide public liability off-site, for example, whilst at the racecourse or gallops. This insurance can pay for legal fees as well as any compensation that might be awarded. Contact Us

Bloodstock insurance

Bloodstock insurance is an essential element of comprehensive racehorse insurance, protecting your horses against major risks such as death, theft, illness, or injury. Policies can also include cover for associated veterinary fees and consequential financial losses. The right approach depends on ownership and how your horses are managed – in some cases, cover may overlap with Care, Custody & Control insurance. Our team will advise on the most suitable racehorse insurance for your operation, helping you to ensure bloodstock is accurately valued and properly protected. Contact Us

Motor Vehicle insurance

The heavy reliance on, and high costs associated with, specialised vehicles such as horseboxes can make them a core part of your assets; this is why it is so important they are correctly insured. Equally, you may need to consider whether you provide transportation of animals as a part of your services, as well as what you are transporting them for; for example, if it is for racing event purposes only or also for training or treatment. However you use your vehicles, we can advise you on the best way to insure them. For more information on cover for farm and equestrian vehicles, visit our Agricultural Vehicle Insurance page. This specific Management Liability cover, Rural Protect, provides cover for individuals and the business, for disputes in various forms; for example, employee disputes and contract disputes, as well as other third-party allegations. This policy also provides cover for FFI from the HSE, RSPCA, Defra and the like, should intervention be required. The Rural Protect policy is highly recommended by us for all rural businesses – please read more on our page here.

There are many considerations when it comes to suffering a loss and at an already stressful time, Loss Recovery insurance can be extremely beneficial. This type of insurance provides you with an independent, expert Loss Adjuster in the event of a large loss, to help accurately assess your losses, support with remedial action and negotiate your claim settlement with your insurer. This can be particularly helpful when there are, potentially multiple, third parties involved. As an independent advisor, they will work on your behalf to assist our in-house Claims Team with obtaining as swift and fair a settlement as possible.

In the event of a material damage claim that renders your business temporarily unfit for operation, such as damage to a building or theft of vital equipment/contents, Business Interruption cover can kick in to provide a crucial lifeline. It is designed to cover the loss of income suffered during this time, allowing you to meet contractual obligations, payment of employee salaries for a pre-agreed amount of time, as well as additional costs incurred due to the claim, such as finding alternative appropriate premises to accommodate valuable bloodstock.

Racehorse Trainers Insurance FAQs

Your cover can be designed to protect your horses, staff, and business from a wide range of risks. It can include cover for bloodstock, stables and equipment, public and employers’ liability, and specialist protection such as Care, Custody & Control. Depending on your needs it can also extend to protect you at events, when transporting animals and for training-related risks.

Even small-scale trainers face significant risks such as injury to horses, damage to property, or staff accidents. Having tailored trainers’ racehorse insurance helps to ensure you’re protected against these potential financial losses, regardless of the size of your operation.

If you care for, train, or exercise horses owned by others, Care, Custody & Control Liability insurance is essential. This can provide financial protection if a client’s horse is injured, becomes ill, or dies while in your care, and a claim is made against you for negligence.

Motor vehicle insurance can include specialist cover for horseboxes and trailers used to transport horses for racing, training, or veterinary treatment.

Employers’ Liability insurance is a legal requirement for any trainer employing staff, including part-time, casual, or family workers. It can cover compensation and legal costs if an employee suffers a work-related injury or illness and makes a claim.

For a review of your racehorse trainers insurance, simply complete an enquiry form here or contact our team. We’ll discuss your setup, review existing policies, and aim to create a tailored solution that provides the right level of cover for your horses, people, and property.
