This year McClarrons are once again sponsoring the Bright Young Star Award at the Malton & Norton Pride Awards 2016.
Now in its seventh year, the Pride Awards remains a highly anticipated annual event within the local community. This year over 200 guests are expected to descend upon The Old Lodge in Malton to celebrate the businesses and individuals that make Malton & Norton a wonderful place to both live and work. The event aims to recognise those who make a real difference in the community whether they be businesses, not-for-profit organisations, volunteers, schools or individuals achieving in sports, arts or in any other way that has a positive impact on the lives of others locally.
McClarrons’ Development Manager, Steven Swift, commented: “Having been involved in the Pride Awards since the very beginning, it is very rewarding to see how the awards have grown to become such a popular event in the calendar for the local community and the support for the evening is incredible”.
This year’s categories include: Dedication to Sport, Customer Service Award, Food & Drink, Business Personality of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Established Business Award, Bright Young Star, Local Hero of the Year, Teacher of the Year Award and finally, a new category for this year – Charity of the Year. There are also two charities being supported by the evening’s charity raffle and auction: The Rob Stephenson Trust and LIAM.
The Bright Young Star Award was set up in memory of Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson, two promising young jockeys who were tragically killed in 2009. Supported by both families, the award is presented each year to a young individual whose drive and passion has led them to excel in their chosen field. The finalists for this year’s award are:
Chloe Shipley
Chloe’s mum passed away at a young age having suffered from cancer. Chloe has worked tirelessly and raised £14,000 for cancer charities by organising Decade of Hope, Family Fun Days, quizzes and bike rides. Chloe organised a Dance-a-thon for Stand Up to Cancer last October, where both Chloe and her sister Kirstie danced solidly for 12 hours. Chloe also did the dancing/cheering for Race for life this year, for which she choreographed the dance. Not only this, she is also a helper at Ryedale Youth Theatre’s rehearsals and shows, back-stage or wherever needed.
Vicky Harper
Vicky is 19 and lives with her family in Norton, she works for Goodys and completed her Apprenticeship at The Academy in Norton. Vicky won Apprentice of the Year at the Scarborough Business Awards 2015 and Hair & Beauty Apprentice of the Year at the STARs (Scarborough Talented Apprentices Recognised with Success) Awards in July.
Lilly Walker
Lilly has achieved a great deal over the past year. At only 10 years old she has achieved an associate position within the Northern Ballet and has also gained her third year as a Yorkshire Scholar Reserve on the associate programme with the Royal Ballet School. Lilly has appeared in Panto as a Junior dancer at the Grand Opera House York beating over 120 people for the audition spot.
Alexia Ellis
On 28th October last year Alexia, aged just four years old, called 999 to save her mum’s life. Her mum had become unconscious due to a heart condition and rare nevous system disorder and was unresponsive. She knew her mum needed help and called an ambulance. She told the call handler her mum’s name, age and address and even told them what heart condition she has – Alexia saved her mum’s life that day.
Steven Swift added, “It is an honour for McClarrons to be involved with the awards and in particular the Bright Young Star Award, something we feel incredibly proud to support. Over the years we have seen so many different examples of how young people can inspire others and this year is no different. We wish all the finalists the very best of luck!”
