Work Experience at McClarrons with Archie

A little bit about Archie

I am an S5 pupil at Culloden Academy, and I completed my National 5 qualifications earlier this year. This summer I chose to do a week of work experience at McClarrons to gain valuable insight into office life and the working environment, to see if I enjoy it and to understand if this could become a potential future career opportunity for me.

Working at McClarrons

During my time at McClarrons, every day was filled with a variety of tasks, external events, and meetings that kept things engaging. The team at McClarrons were really welcoming and provided support whenever I needed it. I even got to join them at their Summer Social at the end of the week, which was great fun.

Activities undertaken at McClarrons

At McClarrons, I was given a varied number of tasks such as:

  • Attending meetings and highlighting key points and actions
  • Reviewing company websites
  • Creating my first CV
  • Gathering and collating data into spreadsheets for the marketing team to execute on targeted campaigns
  • Updating and organising files for the Finance Team to support their move to new software
  • Packing, franking and posting out letters for marketing campaigns

I was also given the opportunity to attend a number of events during the week. I went to The Great Yorkshire Show and Sir John Jones’ talk at the MKM stadium in Hull hosted by FEO – here I heard about some of the key principles of effective leadership. I was also given the opportunity to shadow a client meeting, learning about the client journey at McClarrons and how a client renewal meeting is conducted.

On my final day at McClarrons, I also did a mock interview, which was a good experience for the future, and got useful feedback on what went well and what I could improve on.

Key learnings and takeaways

Over the week, my understanding of the insurance industry has grown, and I discovered there is much more to it than I realised. It has been a very interesting experience during my week at McClarrons, and it has provided me with skills and knowledge that I will be able to carry forward into the future.

Final thoughts from Archie

My time at McClarrons has been both educational and enjoyable. I am very appreciative of everyone at McClarrons for being so welcoming, and I am leaving with a clearer understanding of the insurance industry and what it is like to work in a professional office environment.
