Understanding the Latest Immigration Policy Changes in the UK
In December 2023, the UK announced significant changes to its immigration policies, which have a direct impact on care providers and workers. Soon after, in March and April 2024, the Home Office began to implement these changes. It was much to the sector’s shock that changes were happening so soon and even the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee, a select committee of the House of Lords that refers secondary legislation, wrote to the Home Office to ask for more information about the effect of such changes.
As a result of the announcement and changes being made swiftly after, care providers and workers needed to proactively adapt and navigate these new policies to ensure compliance and maintain the smooth operation of care services. Doing so would help them anticipate challenges, identify opportunities, and develop strategies to effectively manage the impact of these changes on their operations. The recruitment and retention of care workers became a heightened challenge in the face of immigration policy changes, as the BBC reports “Care companies fear the ban on dependents will put potential recruits off moving to the UK”. Furthermore, care workers had to be aware of the new requirements to maintain their legal status in the UK.
